Overview

The interactive Display Panel (iDP) is interactive image viewer. The slideshow advances either automatically or on demand.  When touched by any avatar, the panel offers a notecard

Each notecard can contain information that is specific to the location seen in the image.  Notecards and images can be prepared by the panel's owner.  Once a "standard content set" is developed, that version can also be made available.

This tool is being developed to function as an on-demand content delivery tool. Various features are being considered here. This first model will serve as a tool for SL Mentors.  Once a list of most-recommended locations is established, the images will be captured, and descriptions written.  Once a complete content set is produced, the object can be field tested. With feedback and modifications, the tool will ultimately be shared with the Mentor community.

Interactivity

The panel can be kept in inventory until needed, at which time the owner simply pulls it onto the grid near their own avatar. Images of SL locations are displayed. When any particular image is displayed, a Second Life user can click on the panel to receive a notecard with information about the SL location depicted in the image, along with a landmark or two. Combining the self-serve delivery of notecards with particular images allows an instructor (or Mentor) to provide a selection of content to users.

Features

  • Panel rotates to face the owner automatically on resolution (on rez)
  • Images can be shown one by one, or as a slide show, as controlled by the owner
  • Panel can be rotated, raised and lowered, by clicking on the panel frame
  • Notecards are given to any agent that clicks on a picture
  • Chat commands control some behaviors, with a help command that lists all commands
  • Variables in script allow for user to customize some features

* Notecards must be named similarly to image items they accompany.  Example

image name:           Help Island (Public) 1

image name:           Help Island (Public) 2

notecard name:       Help Island (Public)

Assigning the notecard name is more important, because that will appear in the user's Inventory.

Content Sets

  1. Mentor - A general set of images and notecards for use by a SL Mentor (Kimi's list)
  2. Greeter - A general set of images and notecards for use by a SL Greeter (if distinct from Mentor set)
  3. Public Info - A set that is developed specifically for a region or area of interest
  4. Immigrants - a set of images and cards of interest to newly transferred users from the Teen Grid (Creven, this one's for you! we need a new title for this themed set, any ideas?)
  5. Carrina's Shopping Guide
  6. Angelyka's Favorites - SL locations picked by a resident

Project Log

Originally, the iDP was designed to be a tool for any Second Life (SL) mentor. The inspiration came during interactions with mentor "Kimi Goalpost" (SL avatar name). Early in Azwaldo Villota's life (day two), she acted as a guide in SL, becoming a remarkable source of information. In that role, she was a teacher; and, her actions served as a first glimpse into the nature of education in a virtual reality.

It seemed that, as a mentor, Kimi might benefit from the availability of a virtual "signpost" that could be pulled out of her pocket (inventory). A picture display panel was seen in several places, and in various forms, so it seemed that development would be possible. The iDP project had begun.

A search of the SL Forums was the first step. The open source PictureBoard script posted by Cienna Rand provided the base script for the object. [http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=25943&highlight=PictureBoard+Script]

The first modification was to add automatic orientation: It would be best if, when the owner of the panel rezzes the object from inventory (instantiates the the object in the VR simulation), the panel would face either the owner or the avatar that is nearest to the panel. It was decided to have the object face the owner, so to avoid misalignment due to passerby who are not in the Mentor's audience. The ability to rotate and raise/lower the panel was then added. Soon into development, while showing the object, Kimi Goalpost and Artie Noarlunga suggested that the panel deliver notecards or landmarks to a user, and this feature was added.

Feedback suggests that various uses are possible, given the base model. Those variations can be explored in different models. One example was suggested by Decka Mah: use the viewer as a class album to provide participants with a registry of classmates, so that a student can learn to recognize each other.

The lack of well-developed content (an assortment of images with accompanying notecards) suggests that some collaboration will be beneficial. Various content set themes have been suggested, and noted on this page [above]. A post at the SL forums drew recommendations for locations to include in the Mentor set, and a HS student (Creven Alonzo, a newly immigrated from the teen grid) has been employed to assist with capturing snapshots of various locations. Some instruction in use of the SL viewer were necessary, along with guidance in image composition and optimal image file resolution.

An early version of the tool was presented to a group of educators in SL, with a small set of images / notecards serving as a content set. Response was positive.

In the next presentation, one of Creven Alonzo's images will be used.

There is a need to develop a standard model of this tool; a standalone unit that has optimal features, yet can be completed within the next month.
